Heartsaver® CPR AED for K-12 Blended Learning

American Heart Association CPR & AED Training for Students, Faculty, and Staff

The American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR AED for K-12 Blended Learning program gives schools a flexible way to provide high-quality CPR and AED education to students, teachers, coaches, and school staff.

The K-12 blended-learning bundle combines the official Heartsaver® CPR AED Online course with digital student materials and a Heartsaver® for K-12 Schools Course Completion eCard. It is specifically designed to support CPR and AED training within K-12 school environments.

The current Heartsaver curriculum is aligned with the 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) and is designed to build both lifesaving competence and the confidence to act during an emergency.

How the Blended Learning Course Works

1. Complete Heartsaver® CPR AED Online

Students begin with the American Heart Association's self-directed online training. The online course allows learners to complete the cognitive portion of their training on their own schedule using interactive activities, instructional videos, real-life demonstrations, and knowledge checks.

This format makes the program especially well suited for schools because much of the educational content can be completed before students or staff arrive for hands-on training.

2. Complete the Hands-On Skills Session

After completing the online portion, participants complete a hands-on skills session conducted by an American Heart Association Training Center Instructor.

The hands-on portion allows students to practice and demonstrate the physical skills required to perform CPR and use an AED effectively.

With Cypress Education, the skills session can focus on turning what students learned online into practical skills they can confidently use at school, at home, during athletics, or elsewhere in the community.

3. Earn the Heartsaver® for K-12 Schools eCard

Students, faculty, and staff who successfully complete the required AHA Heartsaver training may receive the Heartsaver® for K-12 Schools Course Completion eCard. The American Heart Association identifies this credential specifically for qualifying K-12 school students, teachers, coaches, and staff.

AHA Heartsaver course completion credentials are generally valid for two years.

What Students Learn

The Heartsaver® CPR AED course prepares participants to recognize a cardiac emergency and provide lifesaving care while professional responders are on the way.

Training includes skills such as:

  • Recognizing when someone needs CPR
  • Activating the emergency response system
  • Performing high-quality CPR
  • Using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Responding to choking
  • Adult CPR and AED use
  • Child CPR and AED use
  • Infant CPR
  • Understanding the importance of immediate action during cardiac arrest

The AHA describes Heartsaver® CPR AED as training that prepares people with little or no medical background to provide CPR and use an AED safely, promptly, and effectively.

Who Is This Course For?

The K-12 program is designed specifically for the school community and can be used for:

  • Middle and high school students
  • Teachers
  • Coaches
  • Athletic department personnel
  • Administrators
  • School nurses and health-office support personnel
  • Transportation staff
  • Security personnel
  • Facilities and maintenance employees
  • Food-service personnel
  • Other K-12 school employees

The American Heart Association specifically defines the K-12 audience as students, faculty, and staff of K-12 schools or school systems, with faculty including teachers and coaches.

Why CPR & AED Training Belongs in Schools

A cardiac emergency can occur anywhere—including a classroom, athletic field, gymnasium, auditorium, parking lot, or school event.

Putting CPR and AED skills into the hands of students and school personnel helps create a community of potential responders who understand how to recognize an emergency and begin lifesaving care.

Heartsaver® CPR AED is designed to teach participants to recognize cardiac arrest, act quickly, perform CPR, and provide AED support until additional help arrives.

For students, the benefit goes beyond completing a requirement. CPR and AED training provides a practical skill they can carry into college, employment, athletics, parenthood, and their communities.

Why Train with Cypress Education?

At Cypress Education, we want school CPR training to be more than another requirement students complete and forget.

Our goal is to help participants understand:

Recognize the emergency. Call for help. Start CPR. Get the AED. Take action.

The blended-learning format allows schools to move much of the classroom material online while reserving in-person training for what matters most—hands-on practice, instructor coaching, and confidence-building.

That makes the program particularly useful for school systems looking to train large groups without requiring every participant to spend the entire course in a traditional classroom.
